8/12/08 Update:  Green lettering
We have just crossed over that "longest day of the year" date of June 21st and
we are now entering the few glorious months of sunny (I hope) weather and
happy horse showing.

Show News:

The June 15th Father's Day, WMRC horse show was a success.  Many of our
MWVHSC exhibitors turned out despite the wet weather.  Congrats to all on
their successful competition at the this old and well known show.

Show tip:   This is a good time to make a point to all exhibitors.  Every horse show (or
group of shows) have their own rules and criteria.   If you are competing at shows other
than the MWVHSC shows, it would be of benefit to you and to that show's management
if you inquire as to the differences if they are not included in the show program.

Sometimes there are different criteria under classes with the same heading.  As an
example would be Jr., Sr., and Adult sections.  At the MWVHSC, Jr. (junior) refers to
any exhibitor who is 18 and under as of January 1st of the current year.  We do not
currently offer a Sr. (Senior) section.  Our Adult section is for those exhibitors who are
19 and over as of January 1st of the current year.   Other horse shows do offer the three
designations with different age separations; Jr. 14 & under, Sr. 15-18 and Adult 19 and
over.   Another example would be Novice Horse or Novice Rider.  These classes have
many different variations.

The Coos Country 4-H Qualifying Show was held on June 21st at the
Lancaster Fairgrounds.  The weather was ideal with plenty of cloud protection
from the sun and the rains held off all day.  I was fortunate to be asked to
Judge this year's show and was impressed with the preparations that these
wonderful young people put into their horses.   The Fitting and Showmanship
classes were tough, as was the equitation and performance classes.  I would
like to wish our Coos Country State Team the very best of luck at the State
Show next month.

Marissa Snelling has just returned from the World Pinto Show in Tulsa, OK.
Marissa and Diamond Investor (Cooper) went Top Five in Ideal Pinto English;
Top Ten in English Equitation and Top Ten in Western Pleasure.   Marissa and
Cooper will be competing at several more Pinto/Paint shows this summer.
Check out Marissa's page in the MWVHSC Family section for photos.
Marissa writes that Good N Bay, her QH gelding is retired and will be enjoying
a few trail rides.  She hopes to be able to schedule in a MWVHSC show if there
are no conflict of dates with the Pinto/Paint shows.

Farm News:

New horses are still being purchased and shown by our exhibitors.  Marilyn
Hannah has recently added a Halflinger to her farm.  Angela Hooker and Laurie
Collins have added Miniatures to their barns.  Allison Smith competed on a
new Paint.  Shirley Smith has bought a new Quarter Horse gelding and Bryant
Wheeler rode his new Arabian at the last show.  Cathy Williams competed with
her Morgan and her new Saddlebred Pinto.  Emily Savage brought out her new
Saddlebred mare.  Tracy MacKillops rode her daughter's Paint filly and Emily
Day competed with her new Quarter pony.  Peggy Desautels brought out her
new QH gelding with grandaughter Katie riding and also her latest Miniature,
Chester.   Matthew Roy competed successfully on his new horse, Fancy
Machine.  Alix Turner competed on her new QH gelding, Chief of Seattle.
Christina Morin has a new Arabian, Jabari Emir.

Marilyn Hannah has just sold her good mare, Jewel,  to our Circuit Secretary,
April Alonzo.  Having a horse has been April's life long dream and now she has
fulfilled it.  Many thanks to Marilyn for this wonderful opportunity.

Peg Desautels has sold her two year old filly,  Twist N Pretty  (AKA Peggy
Sioux), to a couple of young ladies from Massachusetts.

Penny Noyes has recently purchased a black mare from Mike MacKillops.
Penny has the horse in training with Jeannine Guthridge and plans to trailride
and show with the crew next summer.  Jet will be joining Penny's mare, Ariel's
Rowdy Fan at the shows.

There are also new riders, some on familiar horses and others on new horses.
Bailey Stillings is competing on Mercedes Belanger's Fair Hill Braveheart.
Caresse Rowe is riding Sunday Equinox for Rock Lawn Farm and Cecile Healy
competed with Straight Jacket.  Alhead Dupont competed with Sheffiend
Wednesday and Joshua Jhanson showed his Image of Tesigna.  Jeff Urquhart
competed with Go Bond and IBF Luck of the Draw.  Even some Dads have
gotten into the action!  Dan Savage rode Sunday Equinox,  Claude Roy rode
Fancy Machine and Marc Belanger rode Fair Hill Hello Dolly at our last show.

Rock Lawn Farm now has 11-12 foals on the ground.  In fact, following the 4-H
show on Saturday, Penny and I stopped at Rock Lawn and missed a new foal
by about 10 minutes.   We enjoyed seeing the new foals and also the ones who
were born several months ago.  How quick they grow.

The last foal has been born at Rock Lawn.  This one is a drop-dead gorgeous
Saddlebred chestnut colt out of their Pinto Saddlebred mare.  At one day old
this colt showed a lot of animation and boldness.  The mare will be bred back
to Rock Lawn's Saddlebred Pinto stallion.

Ok, ya got me!

Eating one's own words, or perhaps,  "cold day in h__l" or "never again"  are
some of the comments (among others) that I've made when friends have said
that I needed another horse.   My cousin, Cassie, tried to get me to "adopt" a
rescue foal;  Penny Noyes from whose Dad my father bought my first pony
over 50 years ago said "It just isn't you without a horse".  Others have hinted
that they knew where there was just the "right" horse.   This has gone on for
three years since I laid my last two geldings (Andy and Nitemare) to rest.  Since
then, I have lightheartedly responded with one of the above comments.
My horse needs were fulfilled with the shows and if I had the urge to ride,
Shirley, Peggy and countless others offered to hand over the reins many
times.
Well, I've
eaten the words,  h__l has frozen over and I've learned to never say
never again.   Through shear luck, good timing and some deep soul searching,
I have bought a horse!!!   And not just any horse.
Last summer I had the opportunity to ride and enjoy Peg's good Paint mare,
Easy Eyed Lady.   Easy was sold last fall but through  God-given good luck,
Dan Savage was able to purchase her back this summer and has sold her to
me.   I am not looking at the show ring (won't say "never") but to enjoy trail
riding with the crew.    So, all that tack still hanging in the tack room (that I was
so reluctant to part with) now has a new purpose.   To everyone who harped
on me for three years..................ya got me!!!   Thanks

The July show is now history.  Once again, our exhibitors turned out in full
force and all classes had entries.  The weather was perfect and with the
exception of a short rainy spell, everyone was comfortable.  We are now half
way through the 08 season.  If you are riding for Year End awards and you
only have attended only one of the first two shows, it is important to remember
that you must attend three out of the four for Year End Points to accumulate.
Almost all classes are still up for grabs.

Reminder:  The next MWVHSC show will be on August 10th with a post entry
date of August 1st.  Save yourself $8.00 and get your entries in early.

Also, don't forget that there is only a two week span between the next show
and the one at the Fair.

News Flash!!  Lisa Bell is a new Mommy and Charlie has a new grandson!
Ethan Kane Early arrived July 18th at 6:18 PM.  Congrats to the family on the
new addition.

I'm happy to announce that Marilyn Hannah is out of the hospital after a
successful gall bladder operation.   Now she can concentrate on her new
Halflinger gelding, Dan.  Way to go kiddo.

If you missed it elsewhere on the website and you are attending the Aug. 10th
show, PLEASE park on high solid ground.  The fairgrounds is swamped and
the usual infield, low side of racetrack and grass between roadway and shed
row stalls are off limits.  If in doubt where to park, ask at the booth.

Our third show of the season is now history and I would like to take the
opportunity to thank all of our exhibitors for their patience and understanding
regarding the limited parking at the fairgrounds.  No one got stuck and there
were no ruts left.  We were blessed with good weather on Saturday to get
ready and pretty good weather (considering) on Sunday for the show.

The last show of the series is coming up quickly on August 29th at the Fair.
The post entry date is August 18th!
This is important:   We will only be taking
post entries on Thursday evening, August 28th. with the exception of anyone
who has not competed at one of the shows this summer.
   Save yourselves
some $$$$$ and get your entries in early.  Remember I will not be here in
Gorham after August 26th so any entries sent in late will not get to me and you
will need to post enter at the post entry fees.

Regarding class entries:  Please, please double check your entry forms and be
sure that they are accurate and final.  Read the rules/specs before entering
classes.

Championships:  With the exception of the Halter Championship, you are
eligible for the performance Championships if you have "shown" in a
qualifying class.  You do not need to place in the qualifier.   Points from these
Championships go back to the qualifier for Year End Awards.

The show will
start at 8 AM instead of 9 AM so that we can get the show in
before supper time and to give exhibitors a chance to get ready for the Class
AA show on Saturday.

If you are
not showing at the Class AA show and need a stall, please include
the number of stalls needed for just Friday and include $10 per stall with your
entries.  Stalls will not be reserved for Friday without payment.  Keep in mind
that depending on the condition of the infield,  those working out of trailers
may have to park behind the shed row and use the side entrance to the
grounds.   You will be required to purchase a day pass to enter the grounds
and you must keep them with you each time you enter the side gate.

Those who will be showing at the Class AA show and have pre-registered with
Evelyn will already have their passes and stall assignments.  In this case, you
do not need to reserve a stall for Friday; you will already have one reserved for
you.

Campers may come in on Sunday, August 24th between noon and 5 PM and
after Tuesday evening at 5 PM.  You must have your camper stickers on your
campers.  You may occupy the campers as of Wednesday, August 27.  Horses
may come in on Wednesday also.

As Stable/Camper Supervisor for the Fair I have an important request.  When
you plug your campers into the power source, PLEASE be sure the plug (if
you are using an extension) is
off the ground.   Keep all plugs up on tires or up
underneath the camper itself.  With all this wet weather and possibility of
accumulating water this request is a safety issue.   This is also true of cords
used around the stalls.  Do not leave them on the ground.

If anyone has any questions, please EMAIL me.

Let's all have a safe, happy and fun fair.

God Bless and "Think Blue"
Sherrel
