This award is given in memory of a terrific Quarter Horse gelding, known to all as Salty Sharky aka Sharky
Salty Sharkey was bred by our own Fair President, Paul Thurston in the early eighties. Sharkey was sired by the well known Quarter Horse stallion Salty Test.
As a young horse, Sharky was purchased by Paul and Gladys Hanks for their grandson, Danny Smith. Danny competed with Sharky in 4-H, Western Pleasure, Showmanship, Stockseat Equitation and Trail.
Danny's Mom, Shirley, often rode Sharky on many trailrides and in local parades. Sharky was well known for his even temperment and unflappable dispostion. When a horse was needed, Sharky was the one that everyone trusted and wanted to ride.
Sharky was often used as a first mount for leadliners and walk trotters of all ages. Sharky was Danny's leadhorse at the Bretton Woods Stables for several years and was also a member of the Lancaster Fair Mounted Color Guard.
As time went on, Sharky's role included being the first mount for Danny's oldest son, Daniel to show in Leadline and Leadline Halter. Danny's youngest son, Jadyn also rode Sharky before he was out of diapers. Sharky was that kind of horse.
Sharky was a regular competitor at the MWVHSC shows right up until his untimely passing in February 2005. Sharky is sadly missed.
The MWVHSC would like to honor this wonderful gelding by awarding the Salty Sharky Memorial Award to the Winner of the Year End Western Pleasure Champion
